What Dog Has the Strongest Bite?

Whether you’re a dog lover, a potential owner, or simply curious about canine power, bite force is a topic that often arises. While many dogs have strong jaws, some breeds take it to a whole new level.

Many people believe that dogs with the strongest bite force are more aggressive, but that’s not true.

Any pet can be involved in a dog bite incident. So, what dog has the strongest bite? Here is what you need to know.

How Is Bite Force Measured?

The bite force is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). In short, that is the pressure exerted when an animal bites down. The higher the PSI, the greater the force applied per square inch of surface area.

With these measurements, scientists, veterinarians, and dog trainers can determine which breeds have a stronger bite force.

Why Do Some Dogs Have Stronger Bites?

Before we delve into the top breeds, certain factors contribute to some dogs biting harder than others.

These include:

  • Size and skull shape: Bigger dogs with broad jaws naturally have more bite force.
  • Jaw muscles: Certain breeds have stronger and more developed jaw muscles, which in turn, give them extra biting power.
  • Breed purpose: Some dogs are bred for specific purposes, such as guarding, hunting, or protection. With that, they have developed stronger bites.

While some of the dogs on this list are massive animals, others are more compact but still strong.

So, which canines have the strongest jaws?

The King of Bite Force

The Kangal is a breed from Turkey. This dog had the strongest recorded bite at 743 PSI. If you want to compare that to other animals, consider that:

  • A lion’s bite is about 650 PSI
  • A wolf has a 400 PSI bite

These canines were bred as livestock guardian dogs. That means they are great at protecting sheep and goats from predators like wolves and bears. With their powerful bite, these dogs defend their flocks against serious threats.

But that’s not the only dog with a strong bite.

Other Dog Breeds with Powerful Bites

You might not see many Kangals in your neighborhood. However, here are some popular dog breeds known for their strong biting force.

The Cane Corso is an Italian breed. They are descended from Roman war dogs. They’re smart, protective, and need experienced handling. They also pack a bite of 700 PSI.

Dogue de Bordeaux, or French Mastiff, is a big dog with a massive head. However, their large frame is offset by a strong and affectionate personality. These breeds deliver a bite of 556 PSI.

The English Mastiff is another large breed of dog. They have a 552 PSI bite. These dogs are considered gentle giants when properly trained.

Rottweilers are known for their loyalty and protective nature. Their 328 PSI bite is not the strongest on this list. However, they are still considered excellent guard dogs.

Many people would be surprised to see German Shepherds so low on the list. Their bite strength only reaches 238 PSI. While they do not have the strongest bite, they are intelligent, trainable, and have a strong work ethic. That makes them top choices for police and military work, all in roles that require a solid bite force.

Does Bite Force Make a Dog Dangerous?

In most cases, no. A dog that can bite hard does not always mean it is aggressive. In fact, some of the breeds with the strongest bites, like the Kangal and Mastiff, are gentle with their families.

The real factors that determine a dog’s behavior are:

  • Training: Well-trained dogs understand commands, boundaries, and proper behavior. Obedience and bite inhibition training prevent unwanted aggression.
  • Socialization: Dogs exposed to various people, animals, and environments early on tend to be more confident and friendly. Proper socialization reduces fear-based aggression and territorial behavior.
  • Ownership: A responsible owner provides leadership, exercise, and a stable environment. Dogs raised with structure and positive reinforcement are less likely to develop aggressive tendencies.

Keep in mind that small dogs with weak bites, such as Chihuahuas or Dachshunds, can be among the most aggressive animals if they are poorly trained. Bite force alone does not tell the whole story.

Unfortunately, bites are a common issue that owners must take precautions to prevent. According to DogsBite, you have a one in 50 chance of being bitten. When that happens, liability falls on the dog owner.

Regardless of the bite force, the dog’s owner is ultimately responsible for the pet. They need to take measures to ensure the dog doesn’t react to certain situations. In cases where the animal attacks, they could be liable for any damages and injuries.

Unfortunately, not all pet owners take the steps to keep their dogs under control or properly train them. As a result, bites can happen. If you have been attacked by a dog, you have options.
