Every year millions of drivers use the thousands of miles of Kentucky roadways to reach their destinations. Interstate-65
Kentucky’s I-65 historically has ranked as one of the most dangerous interstates in America. In a study evaluating America’s interstates in years 2004-2008, I-65 came in at number 37 on a list of 100 most dangerous interstates. What makes it so dangerous is its high fatality rate. Statistically, drivers involved in accidents on I-65 are more likely to suffer severe or fatal injuries. High speeds, semi-truck to car ratios, and construction are factors that contribute to the danger.
Interstate-75
I-75 travels north to south in the eastern half of Kentucky. It begins in Williamsburg, passes through Lexington, and then through Covington and into Tennessee. In 2014, there were 3,075 accidents on I-75. Not all were fatal, but many were serious. And because I-75 is a common interstate for drivers passing through the state, many of the accidents involved drivers who are not from Kentucky, therefore they were unfamiliar with the interstate itself.
Interstate-64
I-64 travels west to east through the northeastern part of Kentucky. Beginning in Louisville running through Lexington, I-64 passes through Ashland and into West Virginia. I-64 passes through many Kentucky counties and is host to a variety of types of drivers. Travelers who are just passing through the Kentucky use this interstate, but additionally I-64 is used daily by Kentucky residents traveling to work and other destinations throughout the northeastern part of the state.
Bluegrass Parkway
Bluegrass Parkway, fully named Martha Layne Collins Blue Grass Parkway, travels west to east. Often used as a shortcut for drivers to avoid the traffic and congestion of popular city roads in Louisville, the Bluegrass Parkway begins at I-65 and ends at US-60. Running through several Kentucky counties, the Blue Grass Parkway high traffic rate leads to increased accident risk.
Man O’ War Boulevard
Man O’ War Boulevard is an arterial road that runs through the city of Lexington and around other areas of Fayette County. The numerous traffic lights on this road create stop-and-go traffic that causes a high number of accidents. Drivers using excessive speed or driving distracted increase the risk and the chance that an accident will be severe.
