Hillsboro Transportation Company Sued Following Multiple Fatal Collisions on I-64 West

WOODFORD COUNTY, KY – Thomas Law Offices has filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Estate of John McBroom against Hillsboro Transportation Company and the driver, Matthew T. Jackson following a fatal multi-vehicle collision on September 12, 2025, on westbound Interstate 64 in Woodford County, Kentucky.

McBroom, a 39-year-old commercial truck driver, had slowed and brought his truck to a stop in the right lane of westbound I-64 as traffic backed up ahead. At the same time, a Hillsboro Transportation Company driver, Matthew T. Jackson, was operating a company vehicle 2007 Freightliner Columbia 120 tractor-trailer.

Despite clear weather, good visibility, and ample warning signs of a construction zone and slowing traffic, Jackson was allegedly distracted and traveling at an unsafe speed, failing to maintain a safe distance from vehicles. His tractor-trailer struck two cars, forcing them off the roadway. The driver of the second vehicle was killed in the crash, and the passenger sustained serious injuries.

The tractor-trailer then collided with the rear of McBroom’s stopped truck with catastrophic force, triggering a massive fuel fire that enveloped both vehicles. Emergency responders arriving at the scene found multiple vehicles on fire with heavy black smoke. McBroom was trapped inside the cab of his truck and died from injuries sustained in the collision and fire. Jackson also died as a result of the crash.

“Hillsboro Transportation Company had a responsibility to the public to ensure its drivers were properly trained, monitored, and fit to operate a commercial vehicle,” said Tad Thomas of Thomas Law Offices, representing the Estate of John McBroom. “That responsibility was not met, and John McBroom paid for it with his life. We are committed to holding this company accountable for the systemic failures that made this tragedy possible.”

“John McBroom was a 39-year-old man who left for work that day and never came home,” said Eric Kiser of Thomas Law Offices. “He followed the law, he stopped when traffic stopped, and he was driving safely. His family has been left to grieve a loss that should never have happened.”

The lawsuit, filed in Woodford Circuit Court, alleges that because Jackson was acting within the scope of his employment while operating a company vehicle, Hillsboro Transportation Company is vicariously liable for his conduct. It further alleges the company failed to adequately train and supervise its drivers, and that Jackson was operating while fatigued after exceeding allowable hours of service in violation of federal regulations The plaintiff is seeking compensatory and punitive damages.

The Estate of John McBroom is represented by Tad Thomas and Eric Kiser of Thomas Law Offices.
