Amtrak Train Derailment Causes Multiple Injuries and Casualties

Published on Jun 28, 2022 at 4:27 pm in Train Accident.

An Amtrak train carrying 275 passengers derailed in Missouri on Monday, June 27, 2022. The passenger train was on a journey from Los Angeles to Chicago and was also carrying 12 crew members when it was hit by a dump truck at an uncontrolled crossing. Uncontrolled crossings do not have any warning lights or motion gates that prevent motorists from crossing the tracks when a train is nearby.

The impact of the dump truck caused seven of the train’s eight cars to derail and fall onto their sides. Approximately 150 people were transported from the scene and taken to 10 different local hospitals, with injuries ranging from minor to severe. In addition to the reported injuries, four people were killed in the train derailment, including two passengers, a crew member, and the driver of the dump truck.

Many of the passengers were initially unable to exit the train from their cabins, and instead had to navigate down hallways until they reached the front part of the train. Among the passengers were several groups of minors, including two Boy Scout troops and a group of high school students who were on their way to a Future Business Leaders of America conference. Members of both Boy Scout troops rendered aid and comfort to their fellow victims.

Tragic accidents like this are often preventable, and while the investigation into this particular train derailment is still ongoing, at least one thing is clear—the passengers were not at-fault. In Missouri, anyone who has been seriously injured through no fault of their own may be able to hold the at-fault parties responsible for any resulting damages, including things like medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.

There are additional financial damages to consider when you are involved in an accident far from home. Medical bills for out-of-network medical care and travel costs for returning to home are often outside of most people’s means.
