Louisville Just for Men® Attorney

Just For Men® hair dye, produced by Combe Incorporated, has been shown to cause severe allergic reactions and chemical burns in consumers across the country that may subject the company to law suits and possible class actions.  Just For Men® contains the chemical, p-Phenylenediamine (PPD), and needs a higher concentration of PPD, the darker the shade of the dye.

PPD is known to be a dangerous chemical, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has banned its use in products applied directly to the skin. PPD also has the dubious distinction of being appointed the “Allergen of the Year” in 2006 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society in their effort to raise awareness of the danger PPD presents to consumers.

Although PPD is banned from being used in products applied directly to the skin, Just For Men® is being produced and marketed in part as a dye for facial hair and often includes a specialized applicator brush for facial hair. After using Just For Men®, many consumers are experiencing allergic reactions requiring hospitalization, facial scarring and disfigurement, severe burns, and permanent changes to the pigment of their skin.

Included in the Just For Men® packaging is a “skin patch test” that the consumer is supposed to perform on his inner elbow. However, the test is woefully inadequate. Facial skin is more sensitive and prone to reaction,  and allergy tests should only be performed by trained dermatologists. The “skin patch test” has been banned in Europe since 2007, after a determination by the European Commission Scientific Committee on Consumer Products that the test was unreliable.

The higher the concentration of PPD, the more dramatic, or darker, the effect of the dye on hair.  PPD is marketed for use specifically by men,  although a Cleveland Clinic study from 2001 published in the American Journal of Contact Dermatitis shows that PPD has a higher sensitivity rate in males. According to the Cleveland Clinic researchers, PPD sensitivity exists in 4.7 percent of Caucasian women and 4.2 percent of white men. However, PPD sensitivity for African-American women is 6.3%, and is at an astonishing 21.2% for African-American men.

Because the dye needs more PPD for darker shades, African-American men, the group with the highest risk of sensitivity to PPD, are being deliberately exposed to the highest volume of PPD by Combe Incorporated. The increased risk, although fully known to Combe Incorporated and the scientific community, is not included anywhere on the warning label.
