Cargill Recalls 36 Million Pounds of Ground Turkey Meat Over Salmonella Contamination Concerns

Published on Aug 8, 2011 at 7:01 pm in Product Liability.

According to CNN, on Wednesday, August 3, about 36 million pounds of ground turkey meat was recalled by the Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation because the meat is potentially contaminated with salmonella bacteria. An outbreak of multi-drug-resistant salmonella Heidelberg has been linked to at least one death and has made at least 76 others ill in 26 states in the U.S. and appears to have been linked to the ground turkey products.

Involved in the recall are both fresh and frozen ground turkey products that were produced at the company’s plan in Springdale, Arkansas, between February of 2011 and August of 2011. Other turkey products produced at the plant are not involved in the recall, nor are products from Cargill’s other facilities.

Consumers are being urged to return any unopened or opened packages of ground turkey items manufactured by Cargill to the store where the items were purchased to receive a refund. A complete list of the products involved in the recall is available here: http://www.cargill.com/turkey-recall. Consumers with questions can contact Cargill by calling 1-888-812-1646 toll-free.

Food Safety News has reported that the ground turkey recall is the largest major food recall ever. While the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is categorizing it as the third-largest ever, they note that the two ahead of this recall are Class II recalls, while the ground turkey recall is a Class I recall. A recall is classified as Class I if a product defect poses an imminent danger of health complications, while Class II recalls are classified as such when defects only have the possibility of causing harm.

Anytime someone suffers an injury or an illness due to a defective product, it is important that they remember they have legal rights. Consulting with a product liability lawyer in Louisville can help them understand the options available to them to hold a negligent manufacturer accountable for their suffering and related losses.
