How to Check If a Kentucky Hospital Is Terrible

Published on Oct 4, 2017 at 12:06 pm in Medical Malpractice.

Hospitals should ensure patients that they have professionals providing quality care in a clean facility. Unfortunately, not all hospitals are the same. You might not be in the best hospital possible and in some cases, this can be deadly.

Any time you or a loved one is in a hospital, you’re probably dealing with stress and strong emotions. Whether it’s for a surgical procedure, treatment, or test, these circumstances are never easy. You’re trusting your hospital to take care of you or your loved one. It might be discouraging to know that bad hospitals are out there. But once you know what to look out for in bad hospitals and what tools you have at your disposal, you’ll have all the information you need to choose the best hospital for you or your loved one.

If you’ve been in a bad hospital in Kentucky that gave you less than ideal medical care, whether it was a misdiagnosis or a doctor or surgeon made a mistake in treatment or surgery, you might have experienced medical malpractice. This is when a medical professional’s negligence caused you harm or damage. Thomas Law Offices can help. Located in Louisville, we put your needs first. We’re prepared to handle medical malpractice cases with the attention and care you deserve.

What Signs Should You Look For?

You might wonder how much of a difference a hospital switch could make. Health economists from Harvard, M.I.T, and Columbia conducted a study about decreasing heart attack mortality rates over the past 20 years. While medical care has improved during that time, the study shows that people choosing better hospitals helped drive those mortality rates down as well.

Watch out for these common signs of bad hospitals:

  • Understaffed: If hospitals don’t have enough nurses or doctors on the floor, the staff are often overworked and you or your loved one might not get the attention they need. This could prevent you or your loved one from staying hydrated, hygienic, or at a comfortable temperature. Should an emergency arise, there might not be enough nurses or doctors to recognize and remedy the issue in the time that a well-staffed hospital would.
  • Low Number of Patients. When a hospital doesn’t have patients routinely coming through their doors, they don’t get a lot of practice in running the hospital as smoothly as possible. A consistent number of patients keeps the hospital firing on all cylinders and the staff can keep systems in motion.
  • Mortality Rate: Medicare Hospital Compare allows you to research the mortality rates for the hospital and compare it to others. You can look at cardiovascular complications such as heart attacks or heart failure and for surgical procedures. For the Kentucky area, you can also look at Hospital Inspections from the Association of Health Care Journalists. There are over 218 hospital reports where you can read about past violations.
  • Surgical Errors. Undergoing a surgical procedure might cause you stress. But you shouldn’t have to worry about malpractices such as wrong-site surgery. When you research, look for any reports about surgical errors and stay far away from hospitals that have made them.
  • High Readmissions. If a hospital has a lot of readmissions, they aren’t showing success in care after the patient is discharged. When you leave the hospital, you want to go home knowing you can live there safely.
