Distracted Driving Simulator Aims to Prevent Dangerous Accidents

Published on Dec 15, 2011 at 4:34 pm in Distracted Driving Accident.

Teens in Graves County high schools had the opportunity recently to use a new creation intended to show Kentucky youth the dangers of distracted driving: a distracted driving simulator. Distracted driving can include any of a wide range of activities that draw away a driver’s attention from the road, such as using a cell phone, eating, or putting on makeup. The news station Local 6 WPSD reports that a new poll reveals 80 percent of Americans eat or drink while driving, and data from Drivingtips.org shows distracted driving in 2008 caused a startling 24% of collisions. As drivers under the age of 20 have the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes, this new simulator may be an important measure to prevent teens from driving distracted.

The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety explains that the distracted driving simulator, or “D2” Simulator, exposes teens to the dangers of distracted driving without actually putting them at risk. The D2 Simulator mimics and displays the handling characteristics of a vehicle, and drivers can send and receive phone calls and text messages while trying to also obey the rules of the road, such as steering clear of pedestrians. The D2 simulator is increasingly becoming available at high schools around the country, and students are learning that trying to drive while using a phone to call or text is quite the challenge.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of teenager fatalities, so it is hoped that the D2 Simulator will help teens recognize how dangerous it is to attempt to do multiple tasks while behind the wheel, instead of focusing on just driving.

Though you or your teenaged child may take the proper safety precautions in the car and free yourselves from distractions, others may not, which can endanger other motorists on the road. If you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident caused by another’s distracted and negligent behavior, a Louisville distracted driving accident attorney can help you receive the compensation you need for your injuries and understand your legal options.
