How a Brain Injury Can Affect a Person’s Life

Any kind of physical injury can have an impact on a person’s life. Bruises, sprains, and broken bones to any body part can be painful and take time to heal. However, those types of injuries are likely to eventually heal and allow you to get back to your normal life. But a brain injury might not heal the same way, and you could never get back to how you were before the injury.

When you suffer from a brain injury as the result of someone else’s negligence, you shouldn’t have to worry about the costs associated with your recovery. These injuries can be debilitating and life-changing, so the person who caused your injury should be held accountable for their actions. Thomas Law Offices can help you recover financially from your injuries while you focus on recovering physically and emotionally.

Symptoms of Brain Injuries

Brain injuries range in severity and can be anywhere from mild to debilitating. According to an article published in the Journal of Neurotrauma, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can have serious consequences and can negatively impact a person’s life. Symptoms could be lasting effects of a brain injury, and could last months or years before healing, if they ever heal.

It’s important to recognize the symptoms of a brain injury so that you can get medical treatment as soon as you see the symptoms surfacing. It’s also important to know the symptoms so you can better understand brain injuries and how they can affect a person’s life. Here are some of the ways that brain injuries present themselves, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Difficulty thinking clearly
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Blurry vision
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Noise and light sensitivity
  • Fatigue
  • Balance problems
  • Irritability or otherwise emotional
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Trouble sleeping

These symptoms might be apparent as soon as the injury occurs, or they could take days, weeks, or longer to surface. It’s important to be evaluated as soon as you suspect you’ve had a brain injury or as soon as you see symptoms so you can begin treatment and the healing process.

Lasting Effects of a Brain Injury

Most people recover from their TBI because most of these brain injuries are mild. Unfortunately, though, more severe brain injuries could leave lasting effects that impact a person’s everyday life.

The symptoms above can persist if a brain injury isn’t treated properly, if the injury is severe enough that it can’t be treated, or if the person reinjures their brain while they are still recovering from the initial injury. A brain injury can cause lasting effects on a person’s thinking, sensations, language, and emotion, and the victim could never return to their normal way of life.

In a study done by the CDC, five years after an injury to the brain, 26% of patients improved, 22% stayed the same, 30% got worse, and 22% died. 57% of those injured became moderately or severely disabled, and 33% rely on others for help with everyday tasks.

While some symptoms and effects are short-term, some last longer, and potentially for the rest of the injured person’s life. Here are some ways that a brain injury can affect a person’s life if it is left untreated or if it is unable to be treated:

  • Loss of brain or motor function
  • Seizures
  • Infections
  • Permanent disability
  • Inability to work
  • Unable to perform household duties
  • Loss of enjoyment of life
  • Financial hardship
  • Decreased life expectancy

If you are suffering from a brain injury, you should get medical help right away. When you’re in the healing process, make sure to get plenty of rest, be careful, and don’t push yourself too hard. Your brain needs time to recover, so the best way to allow that to happen is by taking your time and letting yourself heal. Listen to your doctor and make sure to follow your treatment plan for your best chance at recovery.
