Airbag Recalls Affect Several Recent Toyota Models

Published on Feb 6, 2013 at 2:55 pm in Auto Product Liability.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Toyota recently announced a recall of several Toyota models from the years 2009 through 2012. The recall applies to vehicles sold through Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) and addresses an airbag accident danger.

Toyota Defective Airbag RecallAccording to the NHTSA’s recall notice, the vehicles have been recalled because they may have defects in their airbag calibration systems. The defects are more likely in vehicles that have other interior accessories like seat heaters and headrest DVD systems, but they are possible in any of the recalled vehicles. The calibration problem means that the airbags might not inflate properly in an accident, putting the vehicle’s occupants at increased risk for serious crash injuries.

The recall applies to several Toyota models and model years, including:

  • 2009 – 2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid models
  • 2009 – 2012 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, RAV-4, and Tacoma models
  • 2009 – 2013 Highlander and Venza models
  • 2010 – 2012 Sequoia models
  • 2010 – 2013 Corolla, Sienna, and Tundra models
  • 2012 Prius V models

About 3,325 vehicles are believed to be affected by the recall. SET plans to notify owners of the affected vehicles about the risks of injury and to offer free recalibration of the airbag sensors to ensure they are operating properly. Vehicle owners can contact SET at (800) 301-6859 to learn more about the recall, or they can contact the NHTSA at (888) 327-4236 or www.safercar.gov.
