New Study Finds Kentucky Has the Seventh Worst Drivers in U.S.

Published on Nov 10, 2011 at 7:13 pm in Auto Accident.

No matter where you live, everyone who has been driving for a while has had an encounter with a bad driver. But where are the worst drivers found? According to a recent survey by Carinsurancecomparision.com, Kentucky ranks number seven out of all 50 states for worst drivers in the United States.

In order to have a complete assessment of each state’s driving accidents, the study compiled results from three separate sources for motor vehicle statistics: the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) for fatal auto accidents; the American Motorists Association (AMA) for tickets given; and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for drunk driving arrests. The results were compiled and separated into five categories: fatalities per million miles, ticketing given, drunk driving, failure to obey laws, and careless driving.

The study found the amount of incidents per category for each state and gave out points depending on where the states ranked: 50 points for the state with the highest number of incidents in a category and one point for the state with the least amount of incidents. The points were then added up and the grand totals determined where a state ranked in worst drivers.

Kentucky scored poorly in fatalities, drunk driving, and careless driving with 44, 42, and 48 points, respectively. In all likelihood, the high numbers for drunk and careless driving increased the number of fatal auto accidents in Kentucky, and the state ranked higher in both categories combined than any state ranked worse on the list.
