John S. Phillips was Born in Louisiana one of six kids to parents with deep roots in Mississippi and the South. Being the son of a wandering professor, Mr. Phillips is used to variety, change, and free-thinking. When he was in elementary school, his family moved to Illinois where he was introduced to, and fell in love with the cold, corn fields, and combines. Mr. Phillips then spent the next six years on the North Shore of O’ahu learning to appreciate being outside hiking in the Aloha mist, listening to the sounds of the ocean, and developing a healthy respect for other cultures. After Hawaii, Mr. Phillips moved to rural Pennsylvania where he spent most of his time training as a competitive rock climber. During his college years, Mr. Phillips took some time away to live in Europe. There, he learned to appreciate language, direct speaking, and logic. When Mr. Phillips returned home, he finished his undergraduate education graduating magna cum laude from the Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Philosophy where he focused on Ethics, especially in the area of Environmental Ethics.
Graduating in the middle of a great recession with a Philosophy degree allowed Mr. Phillips to become gainfully employed as a Forklift Operator working the twelve hour night shift at the local toilet paper manufacturing facility. He worked manufacturing toilet paper during the years his then wife went to graduate school. When it was Mr. Phillips’ turn to pursue graduate education, he chose The University of Kentucky School of Law to be closer to his roaming parents and the Red River Gorge. At the University of Kentucky, Mr. Phillips was a Research Assistant to Professor Connelly, a Student Clerk for Kentucky’s 48th Judicial Circuit, the Notes Editor of Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Law (“KJEANRL”), CALI award recipient in Professional Responsibility, and a celebrating fan of the CATS in the 2012 season. In Lexington, Mr. Phillips learned about Keeneland, SEC Tailgating, and Kentucky Basketball.
After law school Mr. Phillips had the privilege of serving as a Staff Attorney for the Honorable Thomas D. Wingate for the 48th Judicial Circuit in Frankfort, Kentucky. In Frankfort, Mr. Phillips learned on the cool fall morning walks to the courthouse that Buffalo Trace Distillery smells like the beautiful yeast of freshly baked bread. More importantly, he was exposed to, and immediately drawn to, the art of the Trial Lawyer.
When Mr. Phillips made the jump into private practice as a Civil Litigator, he moved to Louisville, Kentucky where he worked with Clay Daniel Walton & Adams, PLLC representing clients on a variety of civil rights claims. When the law firm split, Mr. Phillips continued working with the spin off group, Adams Landenwich & Walton, PLLC. The majority of Mr. Phillips’ practice at this time focused on disputes between employees and their employers, but these cases then opened the door to clients who were injured or abused in nursing homes. Finding the work especially rewarding, Mr. Phillips determined to dedicate his practice primarily to representing injured clients. As part of this dedication, he opened his own firm, The Law Office of John S. Phillips, prior to joining Thomas Law Offices in August of 2022. Today, you will find Mr. Phillips in Thomas Law Offices’ Central Missouri office working on nursing home abuse, automobile accident, and catastrophic injury/wrongful death cases. When he is not working, he likes to sit on the porch, play chess, think what life is all about, and throw the ball to the dog.
